Hi,

I'm moving back to Boston after a temporary hiatus abroad (I'm currently still overseas), and have been looking for a studio or 1bed in Back Bay, Beacon Hill (not West End), or South End (not SOWA). Budget tops out around $2500; would prefer to keep it to $2300 if possible.

I really would like to do a doorman building if possible -- my online shopping habit is, err, a little much, and package delivery/return comes in handy...

I seem to be just shy of being able to afford most of the doorman buildings in these areas, but one that keeps coming up at considerably cheaper than the rest is the apartments at 140 Clarendon (uses the Hotel 140 entrance, it seems?). They're here: 140 Clarendon - Affordable Apartments in Back Bay Boston | Boston Studio and One bed apartments

Has anyone checked out the units or know anything about them? It seems that they're really tiny, which may explain the inexpensive cost, but I'm still wary of just how affordable they seem to be given the prime location....

Was it not once the YWCA then later The 140 Hotel? If memory serves me right it is just around the corner from Boylston St? If so, an ideal downtown location.

Yes, that's the old YWCA building. I can't get over how $2100 a month is "affordable" these days.

Good location, fun sized apartment. Totally depends on whether you want to pay >$2,000 to live in < 500 sqft. You can get more for your money elsewhere.

Thanks all. Reading the Yelp reviews on the hotel was actually pretty helpful at getting an idea of what the residences might be like (and why the photos of the units seem to leave out the tiny bathrooms!)

You can get a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment and a place to park your car for that price if you go farther out...

It's directly across from the newest Flour Bakery Cafe, often too crowded.
