Do you think it would benefit commuters if there was one? Why isn't there some sort of transportation connecting the two?

There is orange to red or green to red (and vice versa)

Would it be nicer if there was something more direct? Probably, but not feasible as they won't build a new tunnel for that.

I generally walk it, its only 20 min.

My elderly aunt (cannot drive) wanted to take the train to see us but I fear that it would be too complicated for her deciphering which line to take. Not sure how she'd do walking. Though I suppose she could take a cab. It will be most expensive that way though

Connecting the two stations would be wonderful. It's pretty unlikely to happen, though. For what it's worth Penn Station and Grand Central Station in New York aren't connected either, even with a subway stop.

There is an MBTA bus that goes between North and South station. I've never used it, but from what I understand it is right outside North Station.

The orange line from North Station is very quick and painless to most destinations around the financial district. More jammed coming to North Station in the evening.

I usually walk between the two unless the weather is extreme. 20 min walk max for me also. Although I don't recommend someone new to the area doing this until they have a lay of the land. Boston streets are not laid out in an even grid like other cities and it is easy to get turned around the wrong direction.

If she is coming in on the Fitchburg line, she could also switch to the red line at Porter and take it all the way into South Station.

The Grand Junction does connect between the two but it isn't possible to use for revenue service due to logistics such as grade crossings and pollution.

The MBTA studies the feasibility of making such a connection and determined it wasn't worth it. Thank god as I can only imagine a Big Dig 2.0 situation.

It was part of the original big dig plans but was dropped due to the funding issues. Would have followed under 93.

Or take the Orange Line from North Station to Back Bay and pick up the commuter rail there.

Former Governor Dukakis' dream project - the North-South rail link. Wasn't built during all three of his administrations and seems ever less likely to be built now .

The #4 bus goes between the two stations, but it's a roundabout route. Or you could take the Green/Orange line and change to the Red line.

I, too, can't understand why there isn't a simple shuttle or connector between these two major stations, after all these years. Maybe they should just make a Silver Line type of bus ("Gold Line"?) that connects the stations.
