I almost moved to Boston Street in Dorchester last year before deciding on Oak Square. I like the location, not thrilled about some of the shady characters at the T station, but overall, it's probably alright. There's some big empty lots in the neighborhood too which doesn't feel overly welcoming, but overall, it's better than the areas to the south of there. Not bad, but definitely not the safest place in Boston.

You have to cross over that Southeast Expressway bridge to get to Andrew Square from your apartment. I wouldn't do it in the late evening alone because there aren't a lot of pedestrians or cars on the surface street at night to feel safe. The area has potential to get better, but be very, very careful around the subway station itself and the big streets like Dorchester St, Dorchester Ave, and Boston Street.

I lived in the area for 30 years, and moved away last winter. I grew up in that project near the train tracks. So I appreciate people for pointing out that the public projects aren't something to be scared about--they really are mostly full of families and senior citizens. To be able to live there, you have to enter a lottery, have no criminal record, pay 1/3 of your income, and if you are unemployed, you have to do many hours of community service.

But the Andrew Square station is another story. I feel like it's gotten noticeably worse in the last few years and it may be due to the heroin epidemic.

I totally disagree. Fields Corner has always been rough. Even back in the 50's, when My Mom lived in Dot and she said it was full of drunks when she was a kid. My Grandfather owned a cab company in Fields Corner durning that time and was robbed more than once. It has only gotten worst.

Boston Street is totally safe and fine. We almost bought on Bellflower about 12 years ago and got outbid.
