I'd pick a different area. Of course any area can have an issue now and then, but there is a lot of nonsense (oftentimes seedy) and drama that goes on in Southie, along with attitude. Check out the online police log reports. Seriously, who'd want to be down there crammed all in together and put up with all of that? That's not ... living. I've been here for over 15 years, and I've been there several times, and every time I'm down there I feel it's either 1) dirty, 2) unsafe, 3) depressing.

GR623, are you referring to the entire South Boston area, or the comment about South End, or about the specific South Boston area of K street and East Broadway? I'm getting the impression that the areas vary within each section and my concern is for the k street area mentioned.

worried mama-

I'm a 15 yr resident of Southie, and I disagree with GR623's entire post. Obviously everyone has a different definition of "seedy" but I have no idea what area he/she is referring too. If they think South Boston is seedy in 2015, they've never seen seedy. The only areas that may fit my "seedy" definition would be Andrew Sq and the blocks surrounding the Old Colony housing project. Neither are paticularly dangerous, and neither are anywhere near E Broadway/K Sts. In fact K St down to the beach is a beautiful street.

Long story short, if it were my daughter or sister or mother moving that particular section of Southie, I honestly wouldn't be worried in the least.

If you scared to live in South Boston you have issues, its not even close to being remotely dangerous. Even the worst parts of Boston like Mattapan, Roxbury and Dorchester are not even close to being a bad part of town in other Midwest, Southern and East Cities like Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, Philly and Baltimore. I went to BU for 4 years never had one issue walking in any part of Boston at any hour of the day. I am not trying to sound like a tough guy but Boston is a super really safe city for size.

Great post even Andrew Sq and the area around the Old Colony housing project are not even bad lol.. they might have been back in the 60s and 70s that entire area is way better safety wise than it has ever been. South Boston in general is safer than its ever been in terms of crime, it was not even bad when I went to BU in the early 00s.

Southie is is wonderful place to live. It has two wonderful beachfronts - Carson Beach and Pleasure Bay perfectly suited to jogging, skating, biking, and pushing strollers. I've strolled Pleasure Bay 1000 times and rarely witnessed an incident among the thousands of people there every night. There is a little grittiness is some areas but overall, I'm Southie will be a wonderful life experience for a young lady.

Most of these pics are Southie.
