I'm moving to Boston (technically Somerville) in late August (around what I've heard referred to as the dreaded Sept.1 move-in date). I am going to be in town in early August and I wanted to try buying a bed then and scheduling the delivery for when I actually arrive.

Does anyone recommend any specific places to buy a bed? I'm in the market for a Queen mattress, Box Spring, and a simple metal bed/boxspring frame (though I would be interested in a wooden bed frame if i can find a nice one within budget). The most important thing at the moment is that I have a mattress to sleep on. Also, any tips on bargaining the cost down would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm recommending Siesta Sleepworks in Acton. They really know their stuff. At one time, perhaps still they carried a really good line of mattresses that are manufactured in this state. They have good prices and run sales often.

What kind of mattress do you prefer? Personally, I prefer spring mattresses to memory foam. If you're the memory foam type though a ton of my friends swear by the Bob-O-Pedic mattress from Bob's Discount Furniture. Otherwise, I tend to buy most of my furniture at Jordan's Furniture which is another local chain. They are no haggle and I negotiate all day for work so it's nice not to have to work so hard to buy a mattress.

Gardener Mattress has a very good reputation.

I've had good luck shopping at Marty's Furniture in Melrose.

Bernie and Phyls or Bob's Discount Furniture are my always go tos for years in Boston. Great products, way lower prices than anywhere else - and they'll work with you on delivery windows. They are both long time New England institutions, and I love supporting them.

We got our mattress at Boston Bed Company in Cambridge (near the Somerville line). We specifically wanted a latex mattress and they had the best prices I was able to find (not sure about their other types of mattresses though). They delivered quickly and were easy to work with.

Yes, passed it last night.

I think their sign even says DISCOUNT.

I think I've seen Logan furniture in minority areas. May be worth a look if a bargain.

Does Sleepy's have an outlet anywhere?

There's a mattress factory outlet just off Rte. 24 at the exit for Ikea/Costco. The guy who owns it worked for Jordan's for many many years. The factory, I believe, is in Brockton. He told us the factory supplies many of the higher-end mattresses you'd find at Jordan's or Bernie & Phyl's. He was telling the truth -- I saw the same ticking on a mattress that's the same ticking as a major brand for roughly $200-300 less than retail (it's an obvious pattern btw). We're currently saving up for that particular mattress. You can have it either delivered or take it with you,

They have good mattresses for a good price. A lot of their frames aren't great though.
