will be attending school in Backbay area. Question please... She and a friend found a place to live in Jamaica Plain. This is how some maps list it and other maps Roxbury. It is indeed listed as Roxbury though on city statistics for taxes, etc. The address is on Olmstead Street. I wonder if it is Roxbury and if it's a safe place for her to live? Any thoughts? She will be commuting on the T. Thanks in advance for your help.

She'll be fine living there, and she'll be fine walking to the T. I assume she'll be walking to the Green St. stop.

Most of the worst of Roxbury is the region between Walnut, Seaver, Blue Hill, and MLK Boulevard.

I would advise against walking north on Washington.

Many students live in that area..especially from North Eastern. I would be more concerned about pests such as rodents and roaches than crime if I were her. Most of us students have pests tho.

I lived over on Forest Hills St in the '90s and have friends who, live there today. If your child is a typical, overly sheltered suburban kid living away from mummy for the first time, then I vote no. Find a different spot ASAP.

Its a long commute for a "Back Bay" school... Its not a campus-friendly location.

Olmstead is Stony Brook.

Actually, flowbe202, it's a close call. I immediately thought Stony Brook, too, but according to Google Maps, it's slightly quicker to walk to the Green St. station.

Depends which end of Olmstead you live on, I suppose!

I have lived nearby and I would say it is safe (as a male) and chances are nothing will happen to her. That being said she would be close to some troubled areas so she may want to look elsewhere if she isn't used to city living.

She would be safer living in Back bay or south boston. And the commute would be just as easy from south Boston as it would be from JP.
