Boston is still cheaper but the gap is narrowing. When I moved to Boston almost 10 years ago Boston was much cheaper than NYC.

Seriously, don't let facts get in the way of feelings, people.

The Associated Press reports that 1 million apartments in New York City are rent-controlled. This may be why the NYU study found that New York City’s median rent was $1,228 in 2013, just shy of Boston’s $1,263 median. The most recent US census says Boston’s median household income for 2009-2013 was $53,601, while New York City’s was $58,003.

There's more to COL than median rent.

Sure. Like heat & utilities...

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/14/us...w-england.html
New England already pays the highest electricity rates of any region in the 48 contiguous states because it has no fossil fuels of its own and has to import all of its oil, gas and coal. In September, residential customers in New England paid an average retail price of 17.67 cents per kilowatt-hour; the national average was 12.94 cents.

I grew up in NYC. Just about everything there costs more than it does in Boston. Taxes are much higher, mass transit costs a lot more and tolls for bridges and tunnels can run upwards of $15. The cost of gasoline is astronomical compared to MA and until recently natural gas and electric were considerably more expensive (again, the gap is closing).

You can continue to believe Boston is more expensive; It is not, unless you choose to compare living on Beacon Hill to living in a far out suburb in New Jersey or a terrible neighborhood in an outer borough.

I should've clarified I was only responding to the OP's perpetual & forced naïveté about Boston and 'Boston proper' costs. my COL points related to the OP and nonstop wish list.

Thanks for that. But that article does not say the COL is higher in Boston.

Putting aside the arguments of the definition of Boston proper and Boston vs NYC COL, I'd like to know what areas the OP is considering. Compromises among convenience to work, cost, and schools is something most of us have to make and it useful to know how others work through it.

It's getting to be an old system with decrepit cars so breakdowns are pretty frequent. I hear we're getting brand new Red Line subway cars between 2019-2021!
