Hmmm, Orange had an anti-Asian state trooper racking up his ticket score, back around 1983. Brand new on the job, too. What an @sshole. The racism became obvious inside the courthouse, upon looking at his targets. He pulled over for offenses that had not been made by his targets.

Other than that, I never noticed any race-based bias, whether it involved interracial combos or not.

It's not the worst, but for being such a large city it's insane how backwards parts of Boston can be. O

I mean that Boston has a lot of racist residents (as does every city). While it's true that Boston is extremely progressive and a very liberal city, there are still sections of the city that have held onto the racism that was prevalent here in the 20th century. The racism in Boston isn't in your face, but it's very subtle and passive agressive. You should hear how some black Bostonians talk about the racism they face in Boston. Again, while Boston is progressive and I'm very confident that being in an interracial relationship in Boston would be absolutely fine(there are plenty in Boston) but it's still not like NYC, DC, Miami, or Western cities where people wouldn't even bat an eye at an interracial couple. I mean the fact that 1 out of 3 people answered "No" to this question is pretty telling in itself.

Please detail the sections of the city that are racist and in what ways they are.

Thanks, and sorry for the delayed reply. I will give you proper rep when I get to a location I can.

And good point about the "subtle racism." I had it described to me by a good friend, but obviously I've never experienced as I am a white male... and she was a black female. Somewhat of an intimidating one, too. Not sure what it is about a slightly over 400lbs 5ft8 or so-ish well-endowed female that scares people. (I think I do, but its not for this thread. LOL)

I agree with mhsclassof00, in that the percentage of non-white population in MA is simply rather low. I am startled on the MA forum to hear so many warnings about towns going "downhill" when that is code for acquiring a population of people who are not of European descent. (Really?)

I do think the MA area is largely tolerant for the most part, but people in the state take note of racial differences. It's unusual to them. If it were me in a relationship with someone not white I would probably go to a liberal part of VA near Washington or somewhere like Denver or LA, where it just isn't something on the radar screen, merely because there are so many families that mix ethic/racial backgrounds.

People do notice racial and ethnic differences in New England.

As a casual daily matter, they don't notice it where I live now, in SE Florida, but Florida is (despite giving space to many peoples and many types of couples) is nonetheless not what I would call "tolerant." There are still a lot of discriminatory practices with renting, home-buying, and (in the private sector) employment.

I am not writing to criticize MA or anything, it's just something I have been thinking about as I contemplate moving back to the state. I will miss a more multicultural atmosphere, but that doesn't mean I think things would be great for a couple from different races living in Boca Raton. My goodness, there is still, among the affluent and middle classes in SE Florida, discrimination against Jewish people and Catholics, and the ethnic and racial barriers can be formidable for those who wish to excel in fields usually dominated by the privileged.

Just my thoughts as a teacher who works with all kinds of wonderful students, and enjoys the work very much, and worries a lot. Gains in tolerance and opportunity are so often more apparent than real--here where I live in FL, and elsewhere, too.

People notice it everywhere. it's very noticeable. It's how one reacts to it that makes you a "racist". Noticing a cultural difference, and even commenting on it should not be seen as such. It's perfectly acceptable to joke about something like... White people are terrible dancers.. or Italians are loud. but once something is noticed about certain races it is automatically seen as "racist"
