So I have been doing it for a week now. Coming in is in fact a breeze. I leave my house at 6:30 and am at the office at 6:55ish. I Cross VFW to route 9 then 128. Coming home sucks.. I leave at 3:30 and its a 10 mph crawl to the rt 9 exit which i am not used to. Sitting at a desk for 8 hours.. then a car for another 1.5 seems to be the norm for people these days and I hate it. I need to find some sort of thing to replace the physical exertion of riding my bike to and from. Maybe its time to suck it up and join a gym. Even the lunch break makes a walk tough. It's just an industrial park with no retail other then some chain restaurants. I have signed up to the American nightmare. hahaha. I'll stop being dramatic. At least the job itself is much better.

You can try local roads through Waltham and Newton as an alternative. Probably not faster but at least it breaks up the monotony of stop and crawl on the highway.

For some reason, the traffic right now is awful. My husband commutes from Lexington to Newton, and since summer began, the commute home has been particularly bad. There's a bridge that's under construction in Needham, and that seems to be having horrible effects on the traffic, even up onto Rte 128. Or maybe it's something about it being summer (which is odd because that is the opposite of what I've experienced elsewhere -- usually summer traffic is lighter, but it seems heavier here).

So, it is possible traffic will get better in the Fall or after this bridge construction is done.

Maybe you can find a gym that's somewhere along your route home to break up the drive and get in a workout.

I guess compared to my old commute anything sucks. But such as life. I will start looking at gyms in the Newton area. If anyone has suggestions between Waltham and W. Rox as far as a gym or fitness center please do tell.

Planet Fitness is Waltham is only $10.00/month.

There is a also a Y near the highway in Newton that is supposed to be decent.

The Route 128 widening from Route 24 in Canton to Route 9 is almost done. There are 3 miles of it left to go at Route 9 and just south of Route 9. In another 3 years, that source of daily traffic jams will be completed. Until then, stay off 128 at peak commuting hours. If you can't flex your work hours, you can at least use Waze to reroute you on those days when 128 is completely shut down.

Here's another stall to avoid the 5 o'clock rush. Waltham just built a new nice Market Basket mall off 117. Might be worth it to drop by one day a week and pick up groceries. Big savings over your local Roche Brothers. If worried about a hot car, get a cooler or two or those reusable thermal bag and use them.

If it's possible, I recommend a standing desk. It has made a huge difference in how I feel when I get home at the end of the day.
