I'm looking for a 1 bedroom or more for less than a $1000....impossible? A house for $900?
I'm okay with living in poor/dangerous neighborhoods. My only requirement is being close enough to public transportation or via bike ride to get to the Cambridge/west Boston area. No more than 20 miles I guess
Honestly, I know absolutely nothing about Boston other than what I've read online. I've lived in philly for close to 20 years and I grew up 40 miles south of Philadelphia. Only been to Boston once before and I'm excited for the change.
However, I am starting over 100%. I am a house painter by trade, a cyclist and artist who is moving because the mother of my 5 year old girl and 4 year old boy is moving for her new husband who accepted a full scholarship to Harvard grad program. My kids will go to public school there which is good. Philadelphia schools near us now are absolute garbage.
I've lived in bad neighborhoods here in philly (granted its been a while). I've lived on the fringe and all of that. I do have a job lined up in Boston (east Newton) so I'm hopeful in that area...but just the housing situation via craigslist looks terrifying. Shared accomadations for $1200?! No thanks. Give me the hood and I'll be happy.
I'm visiting this weekend...Chinatown bus with bicycle via NYC...where do the poor musicians and artists, punks, and poor people live in or near Boston(not interested in pricey hipster neighborhoods) ? That's where I want to ride to after my interview tomorrow. Thanks for your pointers! Peace!

Providence, or they have 2-4 roommates. Your price expectations to live alone just aren't really realistic.

Parts of Roxbury, Mattapan, Dorchester, Chelsea, but still generally more expensive than what you're looking for, unless you're super lucky.

I know people that have one bedrooms for $1000 range, some in good neighborhoods, but you can't count on those. You have to be first to see it, and it can take many many months to get lucky like that (if you ever do) and you have to drop first/last/security on the spot.

Sorry, its just not realistic.

There are a bunch of cheap places in Providence.

I applaud you on your decision to move to stay close to your children.

You can certainly find a 1 bedroom apartment in Revere within walking distance to the Blue Line for around $1000.

You might be able to find a bedroom in a roommate situation for under $1000. You may want to peruse the listings available off campus housing options at the local colleges.

Good luck.

I think that would be a tall order. Revere isn't as cheap as it used to be.

Appreciate all of the responses. Looking forward to exploring providence by bike this weekend, too. Would a daily drive work commute from providence to east Newton be crazy?

As I said l, I'm not interested in having roommates. I'm a tattooed 40 year old father of 2. Not interested in living with college kids.
