What I'm asking is, is it customary to tip an Uber driver?

bjimmy24 has said he doesn't give a tip 90% of the time. I have never tipped an Uber driver.
I paid $22 to go into Boston each day when I was there and just gave the drive a $5 cash tip.

So you paid $64 each day to get in and out of Boston? Where were you coming from? was that you're only option?

Remember when they first started to introduce credit card payments on cabs? So many drivers would say their CC machines were broken and if you said i don't have any cash and the ATM was too far away, their CC machines suddenly started working again. Absolute charlatans.
Plus, the first touchscreens in cabs (in NYC at least) were very faulty.

There are also plenty of Boston neighborhoods, far from the T, where it is notoriously difficult to hail a cab (or even call a cab on the phone). I've heard the stories about bands requesting a minivan cab for all their gear... and getting a sedan cab.

I don't understand the logic behind tipping cabs but not Ubers.

Most of the time an Uber is cheaper.

When Uber launched, one of their major selling points was all in pricing and no tipping. This was one of their lead marketing themes. Many long time customers found that to be a very easy and attractive part of the service. The policy recently switched, but old habits die hard.

Unless there is some issue with the service, I generally tip for an Uber X ride. Those drivers really have a tough time making it worth their time without tips. However, If using an Uber Black (which was all the original Uber was) I only tip in the case of service that goes beyond expectations.

I dont understand why everyone wants a tip for simply doing the job they said they'd do.

This looks to be a step in the right direction.

Yeah, it's awful as-is. The issue here, of course, will be enforcement. Otherwise, it's just another spot for someone to sit/wait illegally while actual cars with people are forced to keep stopping in bike lanes, blocking bus stops, etc.

I really wish the city was quicker with slapping tickets on cars violating restricted zones (fire/bus/taxi/loading/etc.).

I don't like it.

I'm aware of the chaotic situation that exists, but the main attraction (at least to me) is being picked up and dropped off wherever you want.
