It is a question of how long it takes to get jobs and how much savings they would eat up before then. If they end up spending their max budget on rent and the job search takes longer than they expect...

As so many have pointed out, not enough info. The OP might consider $2500/month lavishly high, but what city are they moving FROM? Maybe in their present location $1500/month gets a nice family rental in a safe neighborhood.

Audi of Brookline is a very short walk to I think the Brookline Hills stop on the D line.

Boston Volvo is right on the 64 bus line and also a reasonable walk from the Alston Street stop on the B line.

So you do have numerous car dealerships that are either directly on a mass transit line (in this case the green line), a very reasonable walk from a mass transit line (again the green line) or directly on a bus line.
Husband was just told that the Herb Chambers Infiniti dealership is moving to Medford. Totally knocks out the convenience for us. It was great that he could take the T there/from there either to home or to work while his car was serviced and that will no longer be an option for us.

So I'm not sure if HC is committed to keeping it's urban Boston presence.

Chambers has proposed replacing the Honda and Infiniti stores there with a new Jaguar/Land Rover store:

Herb Chambers Jaguar/Range Rover Dealership | Boston Planning & Development Agency

Moving Infiniti to the empty store he has in Medford (former Kia) makes sense. It's a small location and perfect for a low volume brand like Infiniti. I have no idea where Honda would move but Chambers owns the old Channel 56 building on Morrisey Blvd. which is empty. Original plan was for a used car superstore which was replaced with a proposed BMW/Mini store but nothing has happened.

Well, it sucks for us. It was nice to be able to drop the car off in Boston and get on the T. Medford is totally inconvenient, so we won't be going there.

Just found out that Chambers Honda on Comm Ave is moving to Dorchester and replacing JD Byrider - next door to Expressway Toyota. They also bought the Best Buy in Everett for another BMW store.

Dealers around Boston, like everywhere else, tend to locate on big lots along arterial roads, not transit-accessible sites. Boston had a dealer row along Commonwealth Ave once—before the Second World War. Not any more.
Coming from a region with generally lower cost-of-living, I don't deny that they'd need to be aware of the local real estate pricing, estimate what their income would be, and consider if it would be a worthwhile move... but as often is the case here, the variously negative, snarky, dismissive tone of many replies really isn't helpful. Besides it just being needlessly rude, people here really don't know much about their present situation and some seemed to jump the gun and say that the whole idea was stupid to even consider and would never work out - I don't think we knew enough to say that. But oh well - you often get what you pay for at CityData.
