Hello,

Just looking for insight on a potential apartment and the area. My girlfriend and I were approved for an apartment in the new apartments on Washington St (by the police department) in Roxbury and are trying to decide whether or not this area would be safe or not, I'd mostly be concerned about my girlfriend's walk home from the Roxbury Crossing T stop to the apartment after work, especially in Winter when it's dark outside as early as 5 pm.

Anyone who has input on this area would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

I would pass, especially given the bolded part.

Not my first choice for a young lady walking alone, and I'm pretty alright with most areas.

You mentioned that you were approved. Is this Section 8?

I wouldn't want to live there, and I don't consider that a safe area.

But it really depends on what your circumstances are. Do you have other options?

Yes, it makes a difference which street you take. As a pedestrian at night Malcolm X Blvd seems totally empty and deserted, whereas if you walk up Roxbury St through John Eliot Square and then Bartlett St to Washington it could feel safer as there are houses all the way along. Is it safer? That I don't know.

And right past the notorious Madison Park campus, whatever that's called now. Tons of thug activity surrounding there afternoon into the evening.

I doubt you'd walk alone from Roxbury Crossing to Washington St (near the police station) during the day.

Again, though, we don't know the OP's circumstances. If the OP is just looking to live in the Boston area and his budget (and background check) allows him a lot of choices, then I think he should definitely look elsewhere. But he may not have a lot of choices.

I don't know ... Just because people are paying $700+ for condos doesn't really make it safe.
