The Green Line was operator error. And through the process of elimination, the Red Line appears to have been a problem with the car itself as they've ruled out operator error, infrastructure problems, and foul play, though the official word is not yet out on that one. It makes sense as the car in question is one of the oldest in the entire system (not just of the Red Line fleet).

You're also getting new vehicles (some starting now, an a whole new series of vehicles replacing older cars starting in a few years)and signals on the Green Line as well as a litany of other improvements and enhancements. It's just not getting the same level of press as the read/orange line improvements.

This is all great news. But, as of yesterday the Red Line is still operating at 30 min delay. The car was taken out on Monday? After this long you would think some smart person would have figured out how to deal with a disabled car and not effect service for 4 days?

I know. That's why I've been cramming onto the Orange Line instead. I agree with you 100% It's infuriating.

The major ongoing problem isn't the derailment. Pick up the car, fix the rails if needed, all set. It's why most other derailments that have happened before aren't some big ongoing service interruption.

The problem is that the car hit the lottery in terms of what it hit. It hit sheds housing large parts of the signal infrastructure for the Red Line, which now look like this: https://cdn.mbta.com/sites/default/files/styles/max_650x650/public/media/2019-06/jfk-signal-house-2019.jpg?itok=_OwzevwE
(Side note: Most of this infrastructure will go away/no longer have to be located there as a part of the signals upgrades). If it derailed a few hundred feet in a different direction, this would have been a non-event to the general public and things would have been back to normal the next day.

As is obvious from all the wiring and relays/racks of electronics visible, that's some very complicated and specialized equipment in there. Since the signals are down because the train smashed all the hardware in the area, everything is running manually, which is slow.

The whole thing with the MBTA is ridiculous. I actually changed jobs and a big part of what i wanted in my next job was to avoid the red line. I take the fairmount commuter line into south station and that's all i have to do now. My life is so much easier. The redline is AWFUL. The city wont fix anything because they KNOW people NEED it and have no choice but to take the broken system. People will have to die on the redline before they do anything, i truly believe this.

The redline was not built for the way it is treated today. It used to be taken by people who didnt own cars (basically poor people) but over the past few decades as traffic has increased, parking has become ridiculous more and more people take the redline. It can't handle the volume. We have a world class city, hub of technology, people in this city are some of the best brightest and richest, but no one wants to help with the MBTA which is such a huge part of the city. Or maybe it isnt? In the end people will find a way to get to work even if it means working from home for many.

It still surprises me how many people actually put up with the MBTA but i guess they truly have no other choice. I feel like i want to kill people when i am squished on the orange, green or redline...so I made it my business to get myself out of that situation. I know other people hate it but they still do it.

The Red Line is getting a 50% capacity increase within the next 5 years thanks to the new fleet and signals. The Orange Line will see a similar capacity increase even sooner.

The Green Line is going to see similar increases in the next 10 years or so as part of the Green Line Transformation.

Also, as a reminder: Boston has no control over the MBTA, it's state controlled and responsibility rests with the legislature and governor.

i'm sure none of them have donated to help out though. You'd think MIT students could come up with some kind of plan. NO one cares, no one wants to. The city/state apparently have nothing to fix it...but basic employees working at the T have salaries of 90k and pensions.

Donate? HA! If those schools would just start paying taxes like the rest of us we'd be in good shape.
