Competitive, but good im sure. The pay may be low(er) adjusted to COL.

However, I do think there a demand for pharmacists everywhere and you shouldn't have an issue finding a job.

The two pharmacists I know do very well. I believe one has improved his income by just working a ton more hours, and the other focused more on management and she's now a regional manager or something with CVS.

My understanding is that the job market for pharmacists in Boston isn't that great anymore. The schools have graduated a huge number of them and jobs aren't that easy to find anymore.

Way too many graduates yearly compared to the number of open positions. From some I know, it is rough and takes a long time to find a new position, even with some experience.

Speaking with a couple of pharmacists I know, they make pretty good money in the regular job and they used to make amazing money working per diem nights and weekends. Today that per diem money has disappeared and mid career pharmacists find it hard to change jobs unless they are moving up. They are expected to compete money wise with new grads which means taking a pay cut.

One has stayed in retail pharmacy but moved into a managed care position. One simply adjusted to the new norm in his existing position in a hospital environment and is working normal business hours with an occasional per diem shift at a physician group office covering vacations. The money is still good but instead of taking 2 vacations a year, they take one.

The majority of recent pharmacy grads that I know of are going to work in life science companies, not retail pharmacies. The PharmD programs are excellent preparation for a career with a pharmaceutical or biotech company.
