There were two who were in the running per the herald. Natasha Tidwell and Kim West.

Not sure if anyone saw the interview with Andrew Lelling... he made some good points that US attorneys don't have unfettered discretion. A lot of decisions are made by DOJ and the Attorney General. She might be able to tweak a few things but she won't be able to just not prosecute people or recommend 3 year sentences on 20 year cases. It is an entirely different ball game at a federal level.

But several US Senators have already come out and said they would oppose.

There are all kinds of qualified people in government and academia who never get mentioned in media because they aren't political. And many of them work in the federal justice system, which is what the position pertains to.
I'm pretty sure the application process would reveal quite a few who are very well qualified. I'd be interested to know how our Senator's went about determining who they believe are the best qualified. Most likely political only.

Tidwell was a cop. That rules her out with this crowd.

I mean there is prosecutorial discretion but it's done on a case by case basis based on the facts, as it was intended to be applied, not some blanket declaration by a self anointed god who basically makes a list of offenses she doesn't like and then declares that these crimes are no longer crimes. And yes, federal sentencing guidelines are a different animal.
