Is there anyone out there that moved to the Boston area from Chicago? I need some anecdotal evidence on the cost of living. How does it compare to Chicago? I have checked all the sites (Sperling, CNNMoney, etc.) and have all the data, but I want some qualitative feedback (numbers can be manipulative). Thanks!

COL will be higher- I know the median home price in metro Boston is 397K- compare that to Chicago around 270K source NAR

Thanks for the response. I know the cost of living will be higher, but I'm wondering if people noticed a significant reduction in disposable income or if it "washed out" when everything is taken into account. Like I said, I have the hard data but want anecdotal evidence.

Chicago is a major world class city- as is Boston- living in both places is not going to be cheap. I live in Connecticut which can be pricey as well- however I find shopping in Massachusetts to be less, as is gasoline. Heating costs for oil can be astronomical, electricity is only slightly better- natural gas is cheap.

Food/groceries not taxed. Wine, beer, spirits far cheaper then CT. Mass. has a state income tax, flat tax 5.3% Sales tax of 5%.
