Ah, so there are certain "kinds" of drunk people you don't want on the T. Some good. Others bad. Got it.

Right, I guess people like me are certainly going to make more room on the train for all these free T riders of Boston. Giddy up.

According to this article, 90% of the MBTA's fare revenue is from the commuter rail. So free subways and busses only account for $30 million in revenue. Thats less than 1% of the Boston city budget. This could be done quickly from a financial standpoint.

AEG was quoting 2.3B in her debates (the entire operating budget of the T) smh...

I dont believe its only 30Ms....but It is much closer to that than 700 Million or 2.3 Billion (again, smh)
I was about to look this up but I'm not surprised. The commuter rail is the only MBTA service that resembles a "for-profit" business or even a breakeven model. Hence the prices are high as already discussed on here. I think they rely mainly on employers comping the cost for the rank and file office employees coming in from the suburbs.

Agreed on how insignificant the cost would be, but the technical purist in me says that's still not free.

You don’t think the riff raff is already riding the T? I don’t think making it free is going to bring on that many new users.
