I'm a 57 year-old woman about to be divorced after 28 years of marriage. I've been living with my husband in England for the past 17 years, but am thinking strongly about returning to Boston, where I got my MS in Information Systems at Northeastern.

I don't know anyone in Boston, but do have fond memories of all the city has to offer. I haven't worked since I've been in England and will only need to do so for personal satisfaction, but will definitely want to do something useful with my days. Any advice appreciated!

Does anyone have any advice on adjusting to a newly single life in Boston? Any advice on neighborhoods? So far, I'm thinking about Back Bay and waterfront condos.

Hi there. I think Boston is a great place to make a change. :-) And Back Bay is a great place to do so (but I'm biased because that's where I live). There are a lot of non-profit organizations in Boston (check out idealist.org) that could be a good way to spend your time. They are always begging for volunteers/staff and since you have an MS, you'd be a shoe-in even for part time or volunteer work. There are plenty of organizations that would snatch you right up :-) Back Bay along the water though, I will say, is very loud. With Beacon St., Back St., and David Mugar, it's insanely noisy. I live a couple of streets in and it's much better. I would recommend Marlborough or Comm Ave. for the quietness factor. Or, Beacon Hill is always lovely as well.

I'm not single, so I can't attest to adjusting to a newly single life, but as I said, I really do think Boston is a great place to make a change.

Cheers!

I lived in Boston as a single, 37 year old guy in 2006, and I loved it.

I lived at the corner of Beacon & Gloucester in Back Bay, which was a fabulous spot. Unfortunately, I rented a basement level studio with a possessed radiator, and I ended up having to move out because I couldn't sleep. You definitely have to be careful when selecting a place to live. Those landlords and realtors will shaft you in a heartbeat just to get your money. I also made a bad decision in taking a job I knew I wouldn't like just so I could get to Boston. Lessons learned!

Anyway, I'm in Michigan now, and I find myself still single at 39. I'm thinking seriously about taking a 2nd stab at Boston next June when my current contract expires. I had a blast there and feel like I got short changed because of the bad apartment and job decisions.

Back Bay is an incredible place, though. Very beautiful, and very close to all the best Boston has to offer.
