There are many, many gyms in Boston. Clubs people belong to depend on their budget. The YMCA is probably the cheapest option. They have locations all over the city. Boston Sports Club is a step up from the Y, again with lots of locations, nicer facilities than the Y. Healthworks is a club just for women, fewer locations, nicer facilities than BSC. The top of the line, fancy clubs are Sports Club LA and Equinox. I've been to Equinox, it has brand new equipment (they opened last summer), a huge group fitness room, a gorgeous yoga/pilates studio with bamboo wood floors, and the most beautiful locker room I've ever seen! Those two are the most expensive, so if you're just visiting, it would be fun to get some guest passes from a friend or just say you are interested in joining and you'll get a one week pass!

Visit yelp.com, a Website that has member ratings of all kinds of businesses as its focus. There's a whole category devoted to gyms. Folks love and hate freely. Reading posts there would be preferable to going someplace and openly requesting a free pass or week's membership - by doing that you put the employees on alert to go into presentation mode. What you see might not be what you actually get once you've plunked down your dues. And ask yourself whether spa treatments, fifteen aerobics classes, gizmos like Nautilus machines, and so on are worth the extra money you'd spend. If a treadmill and free weights are all you're after, why spend more for the sake of saying you work out at such-and-such a place - unless that matters?
