My partner and I are planning a move to Boston from the Hudson Valley NY area and need advice as to what neighborhoods would be best for us. We plan on renting at first but eventually would like to buy. We have been reading about the Jamaica Plain area; however, safety is a big concern of ours and we get mixed information about the crime there. We are looking to start a family soon and would prefer an area that is family oriented and gay-friendly. Any advice about Jamaica Plain or any suggestions as to different neighborhoods that might suit us would be great.

As you are probably aware, JP has many different sub-areas, everything from single family homes in the $1M + range (e.g. Eliot Street, Moss Hill, Sumner Hill) to a large project (near Jackson Square) and everything in between. The areas between Lamartine Street and the Jamaicaway are relatively safe and full of young families. I would encourage you to visit, walk around Green Street between Lamartine and Centre, walk Boylston Street from the Stony Brook T stop to the Pond, walk around Sumner Hill ...I think you'll feel quite safe any time of day or night in these areas.
