I might visit Boston around Christmastime. I don't know how to drive and thusly, have no car, so I was wondering what the public transit system in Boston is like. Is it easy to get around without a car? To what extent can you get around?

Hi Navych1ck,

Boston is extremely easy to get around without a car. It's called "America's Walking City" and rightfully so. The city center is fairly compact so it doesn't take long to walk from place to place. The subway system (called the T) is very convenient and can get you around the city in no time.

If you happen to be staying in a suburb or if you want to visit one of the outlying towns (Salem, Plymouth, Concord, etc.) you can also use the Commuter Rail system.

don't worry, I don't drive either and never had to worry much when I lived in Boston. if you're just visiting, chances are you'll be in and around the toursity area (ie, Downtown, the Commons, the South/North End, Back Bay, Fenway, etc), and these areas all have very good T access. it's only the more residential areas that are mainly serviced by buses (and even further out towards the 'bubs, some areas are only serviced by commuter rail).

not sure where you're staying, but try to avoid taking the bus, since it will obviously be cold! like I said, it's very likely most of the areas you may be visiting (I'm assuming you're a regular tourist and not here visiting families or on a college tour, though even most of the colleges are near train stops) will be off a train line. the most complicated thing about riding the T is the signage. study the map and know where you're going, since the whole inbound/outbound thing can be confusing, as is the outbound green line, which splits into 4 branches, and the outbound red line, which splits into 2 branches
