The Savin Hill area of Dorchester is really nice, but I don't know if you'll get the yard. Dorchester overall is a convenient option, but I would not recommend moving there unless someone who knows the area well is guiding you. Parts of it are great with a real neighborhood feel, other parts are some of the roughest and most dangerous in Metro Boston. Don't move there blind.

I'd look at Quincy. It's just south of UMass and an easy ride to work on the T. If you want to walk to shops and restaurants and public transportation, live near Wollaston or Quincy Center.

You can take bikes on the "T" you know. Just make sure you go to the last car. and you'll be fine...

Why not just live in QUin-Z and take the Red line in every morning with your bike..get off..at JFK-UMASS and bike from there? It'd be easier and much safer in QuinZ with more to do ..- than in Savin Hill.
Did I mention Safer? Regardless of what others say I'd steer clear of Savin Hill aka (Stab N kill) :P

Savin Hill is literally one of the safest neighborhoods in Boston--check the recent crime stats. I agree that Quincy (where I live) has more to do, but Savin Hill is closer in and certainly a safe place. Plus, the beach is a five-minute walk from the T.
