You don’t have to do much; it’s a nice city for exploring, hanging out. Walk through Common and public garden, visit fun touristy Faneuil Hall, go up to the North End in the evening or over to Harvard Square, walk along the Charles River. Baseball people like visiting Fenway Park. The Boston waterfront is nice and there are various boat rides available. You could visit some Freedom Trail sites— Old Ironsides (navy frigate) is a highlight for the younger ones.

The Boston Harbor Hotel is fantastic for kids. Make sure to book a water facing room. With all the action in the harbor and the direct views of the airport, my kids would stay there indefinitely. The Red Sox are in town, but vs the Yankees so those are some of the pricier tickets. If you don't want to buy tickets to the game, the Fenway tour is always fun. Your kids are a bit old for the Children's museum, but the Science museum is always great. Also, we have sent visitors to the Boston Tea Party museum and they have really enjoyed it. A ferry to the harbor islands to explore for the day is worth considering as well.

The Museum of Fine Arts is pretty world class and has a lot of ancient history stuff that kids enjoy. It is walking distance to Fenway park.
