Howdy. I just moved to Central Square in Cambridge, and I'm looking to find some coffee shops that have soft, cushy seating so I can hang out there for hours and do some reading and writing.

I've already discovered Diesel Cafe in Somerville (which is amazing), and Clear Conscious Cafe in Central Square. I've tried 1369, but the seating in there is all small tables and uncomfortable seats.

Aside from Starbucks, what other comfy coffee shops do you know of on the red line? I don't care if they charge for wifi or not, because I don't have a laptop. I just want a place with a good vibe and soft seats.

Zero Cool

The seats aren't super comfy, but the vibe is nice at Algiers Coffee House in Harvard Square. I usually try to get a corner booth off to the side on the 2nd floor and end up sitting on my puffy coat for comfort. The coffee is tasty and the food is good!

There's Sherman Cafe in Union Square, Som.; has a couch--everything else is benches and chairs. 20 mins. by foot north of Harvard Square, down Kirkland/Washington Street. Or bus. The coffee is dark, and the food is great.

There's also a place on the way to that, in between there and Harvard Square; used to be Panini, then a Tosci, now who knows.

Also Porter Square Bookstore next to Tags Hardware. Not much seating tho.

My favorate is Darwins, on Mt. Auburn St. on the West side of Harvard Sq. They have big squishy comfortable chairs and couches. However, these are first come, first served, and the alternatives are tiny tables and rigid chairs. They also have great coffee. One side is a coffee shop, and the other side makes the best sandwiches in Cambridge (IMHO). They have free wifi, and you see many students there with a cup of coffee and a laptop all afternoon. If you go, and if you are lucky to find them, get their pistachio muffins.
