How is the area between Medford and Broadway streets in Somerville, west of McGrath highway? I've heard that the area around Foss Park is dangerous and this seems somewhat close, although Barack Obama apparently lived at 365 Broadway when he was at Harvard. Is there still gang activity?

Is there a name for this area and is East Somerville the area east of McGrath?

Just read that the great chessplayer Pillsbury lived on Sargent avenue although in a much different time.

I know it's a horribly inefficient way to tell, but try Google Streetview. I had to find a place in Boston while living in Detroit and I was able to knock off quite a few properties just by looking for trash or graffiti in Streetview. I mean, sure, a crime-free area can still be dirty but it can still be "sketchy". I'm sure Barack's old corner is going to be gentirifed. I keep seeing people talking pictures of it like some tourist attraction. :O

The immediate area around where Medford St and Broadway intersect is still OK. Beyond McGrath Highway is where the problems lie, and those are being tackled by the dual forces of gentrification and police crackdowns. I worked in East Somerville for over eight years, often walking to Sullivan Station after dark (stopping off for food and drink at the Mt Vernon too) and never had a bad thing happen to me. And I'm one of those people who trouble seems to find, LOL.
Residents of Somerville tend to identify their neighborhood by the local square - there are seventeen of them. Magoun (pronounced ma-goon) Square surrounds the Broadway/Medford St intersection.
