If you want to avoid the college scene, I would live in one of the downtown neighborhoods like North End, Beacon Hill, Back Bay, etc. However, rents are high and parking is scarce.

If you want cheaper, larger, and easier parking, I would look into Somerville, Brighton, or even Cambridge. All three locations have a sizable college presence, but are great locations for a young gal.

I must beg to differ on the green space issue in the North End. You are forgetting the North End just acquired a great big greenspace called the Rose Kennedy Greenway! It's a lovely stroll between the North End and Chinatown.

Somerville anywhere west of McGrath Highway and south of Broadway (closer to the Cambridge/Som. line the better).

Or Brookline roughly along Beacon and Harvard streets (Coolidge Corner).
