What is Roxbury like? Is it safe? I am looking into some jobs there, but I don't know much about the neighborhood. What part of New York might it be similar to?

Traditionally Roxbury has been an area of high crime. I wouldn't suggest living there. Don't confuse it with West Roxbury, which is pretty decent.

roxbury is not a very safe place to be. there is west roxbury wich is nice. also J.P. is somewhat o.k.
and is near roxbury. I do recall many years ago I was going to work there
for the telephone company, and it was so bad they had a policeman walk us to the T. station. I also when to school there, and during the day at no problems, however the school relocated to the hingham area. Ask the people where you are looking to work about crime, you also can check with the boston police. I donot think it would be safe at night there.

If you worked in Roxbury during the daylight hours,I don't thing you will have problems. After dark could be a different story. A profile would go like this:
Great proximity to the heart of Boston, a decaying housing stock, depressed envionment and not much deversity.

I'd compare Roxbury to East New York (Brooklyn) or perhaps Spanish Harlem (Manhattan).

Thanks for the info. Just to clarify, I am thinking about working, not living there. I am concerned about daylight hour safety (not nightime). For example, I have worked in both Spanish Harlem and East New York and while they are not safe areas I have felt fine (w/ the occasional scary few minutes). Is Roxbury a high gang activity area? I don't want to work somewhere where I am going to get caught in the middle of a fight during daylight.

I occasionally worked in Roxbury, during the day, and even an occasional early evening, and I don't recall feeling "unsafe." Just took the usual city-safe precautions.

I went to school very near Roxbury and no way is it safe. It's basically the ghetto. Even during the day I'd be cautious. There are some really miserable people there with bad lives who really don't care at all about your life. One guy I knew was attacked walking up Mission Hill in broad daylight by a druggie. Another friend of mine was stabbed walking home to Mission Hill after work at about 8 o'clock at night. What area would you be working in?

Some of this is incorrect. Mission Hill is not really Roxbury. Roxbury's center is Dudley Square. Mission Hill and Dudley Square are very different. I agree Mission Hill is a great place to live. Wouldn't live anywhere else in the city. As far as working in Roxbury, Dudley Square has a lot of nice shops too, a couple of take out places and diners. It is serviced by the Silver Line which is a grey "rapid transit" bus that takes you right into downtown/South Station in about 15 mins.
Dudley and Roxbury in general can be scary, but not really if you are used to being in the urban environment. People are good and it's generally (though not always) just misconceptions. I would say Roxbury is similar to Lower Harlem, but much much less density.
