My husband and I will be moving to Boston for a job at BMC in July, and have been wondering whether it's possible to own only one car between us. He doesn't know where he'll be working yet. Any recommendations on neighborhoods that are walking distance or reasonably accessible by PT? We're both doctors, so our hours can be odd-- safety may be a concern.

If that doesn't seem reasonable, then I'd appreciate any recommendations on neighborhoods within a 30 min driving/PT commute - urban, hip, and fun.

Thanks!

BMC is tricky because it's not directly off the T. The closest stop is Mass Ave on the orange line. Then its a 15 minute walk (not gonna happen in the winter unless you're brave or love the cold) or a 10 minute bus ride on the #1 or CT1. During rush hour you can find yourself waiting any where from 30 seconds to 10 minutes if its late. Off peak, expect longer waits. To give you some frame of reference....I live in the North End and commute to Albany St (across from BMC). It takes me roughly 30-40 minutes each way.

I think you might like the South End. BMC borders the South End creeping into Roxbury. But if you lived a few blocks north around Tremont, it's nice, lots of shops, trendy bars, and tons of dogs and people walking around. I think I'll move there when my lease is up in the North End. You could hop on the bus for a 10 minute commute or bike/walk to work in warm weather.

South of BMC can get pretty dicey into Roxbury and Dorchester.

BMC is in Boston's South End. I lived and worked in this neighborhood for 7 fabulous years.

This is the South End and the beautiful people who live here celebrating life together.

If you choose South Boston, BMC is only a 5-10 min. bus ride from Andrew or Broadway red line stops. Lots of professionals now in Southie, plus Carson Beach & Castle Island for walks and sunsets.

Lots of plane noise at times (not every day, depending on winds) over BMC/South End AND parts of Southie (landings and takeoffs, depending which area of Southie).

700 Harrison and 45 East Newton are newer luxury rentals, 5 min. walk to BMC, but not as safe as parts of Tremont St., parts of Washington St. or Columbus Ave. areas. St. Botolph street and its neighborhood is adjacent to South End, is charming, and next to Back Bay and Symphony Hall.
