Possibly moving to Boston, where to live? (to rent, school)

Hi everyone.

My wife might be getting a job in Boston in the next couple of weeks, and if she does we are probably going to need to relocate in a hurry. So I figured I would start trying to figure out where we might live now since we will likely only have 2 weeks from the time that she gets the job offer before we have to be moved in.

She is going to be working downtown, I will be looking for a new job/possibly going back to school. We have a 6 month old child and figure that our best bet is to rent until we get a feel for the city, then buy. We are hoping to have our rent be $1800/month or less and to have at least 2 bedrooms 1 bath. We would like to be able to live in an area where we will be able to get rid of our car, and would ideally like to commute less than an hour each way to and from work.

Where should we live/look into living?
