My husband and I are relocating from FL to the Boston area. I lived in Boston for 4 years in the 90's so I'm familiar with the Brighton/Brookline area. We are hoping to rent for a short period of time while investigating areas/towns to buy in and we could use some advice.

We need to be close to Logan airport for my husband's work, and I need to be close to the downtown/Back Bay area for mine. We'd prefer to rely on public transportation, especially the T, as we only have one car at the moment. Finances will be tight and as I remember Boston is a pricey town, but at the same time we don't want to live too far out as we love the city scene. (For example, I was really interested in the South End but I think we are going to be priced out of it.) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
