I'm a landscaper in Boulder and three summers ago while working in a town home complex off of Greenbriar and Smuggler in South Boulder I was surprised to find wild Helix Aspersa snails living in the gardens there. And I didn't just find two, or three or four. I found hundreds! Big ones, small ones, and several egg clusters also. Just like in California. At that particular time my biggest guess was that they were going to be there for only that summer and then not survive the winter. Wrong! Just yesterday I happened to be working in the same neighborhood and this time they were even more numerous! Even after that really cold winter we just had. They seem to have an established presence in this particular neighborhood. Even in areas that are not up against building foundations where there might be a persistent source on heat. This makes absolutely no sense to me as these snails are native to semi-temperate regions around the Mediterranean. But needless to say, I've now got a terrarium full of pet snails.

So, are these the edible types people pay outrageous sums for in swanky joints?

Was this in the Shannahan Ridge townhomes area or South or West in Bear Peak neighborhood?
There are some seriously lush yards in the area to provide some moisture, but still the vegetation isn't anything like where one would think of finding them. Areas around the Saw Mill Ponds or along Boulder Creek might even have a few. Now all we need is some Fiddler Crabs along Boulder Res.
