We currently live in Sacramento, CA. Due to my partner's asthma, the doctors have suggested she leave this area.

We are limited in the places we can move due to the fact that we are two women together -- it can be very unsafe moving to a conservative part of the country (which would be the majority of the US). Or, if not downright dangerous, it can be at least uncomfortable when people are unfriendly just because they see you are different.

We love outdoor activities - rock climbing, hiking, biking, etc., so Boulder seemed nice. But we were also wanting to live somewhere where it was not too crowded -- so maybe outside Boulder, instead. Lots of sunny days is a big factor.

We've read that the air quality is terrible, but in other places we have seen it stated that it is pretty good. Not sure why the information on air pollution there varies so much.

Can anyone help out with this info?

Thanks!

The air quality is not "terrible". There are some days in the winter when temperature inversions can cause a "brown cloud" over the area. Here is a website you can check for more info: Air Quality (http://www.bouldercolorado.gov/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1094& Itemid=404 - broken link)

Yes I second the above post. Boulder is very open-minded. Further, the air quality is probably even a little better than LA jr.

Thankfully Boulder and surrounding areas are very, very gay-friendly and you will see plenty of lesbian couples out and about, so that wouldn't be an issue for you guys. I don't know much about the air quality other than it's worse than most assume. That said it's also seemed substantially better to me than anywhere in metropolitan CA (I'm from the Bay Area and grew up in LA) and certainly the skies here look much better but I know that's not always an accurate indication.

Thanks for the replies. Even reading the official reports (EPA, etc.) it has been hard to get an idea about how good or bad the air is, since there are such different standards by which they measure these things, I guess.

Do you think that we could go out as far as Longmont or maybe even to Golden and still have tolerant, open-minded neighbors? It may be possible to get a property that is a bit larger there...

A lesbian couple from Sacramento, you two are such brave women.
I think California has to be the only liberal state to have a conservative approach on gay couples. That was way to prolonged and (in my opinion) stupid, I am glad that it is legal now .

You should have a great time in Boulder, the air quality is nothing compared to the CO2 cloud over California. In my opinion I find it to be a college town with a younger feel to it but since you enjoy outdoor activities you should be fine with that.
I will say though that Boulder isn't in the mountains, it is still part of the plains but it is very close to mountain activities.

Have fun in Colorado, I am trying to make my move there now. I am just trying to find a secure job.

Thanks, Matt. It is still not legal to get married in our state, but we are since we got married before Prop 8 ("Prop Hate") passed. There are still domestic partnerships available, however.

Good luck finding a job there! Maybe we will both be living there someday. I sure hope we can move there, too.

I hope you and I both get the opportunity to move there too.
Will all of the changing in the law I can't remember what it says now, but I do think Prop 8 was overturned. I could be wrong though.

No, you are right about that. But it is being battled in the courts and so same-sex couples still can't get married. If it goes to the supreme ct. we can be pretty sure it will not stand, given the right-wing extremists on the court right now, but who knows...
