Hi,
We're looking at making a move from Wisconsin to somewhere with milder weather and less family. I have a good job and work from home so I can live anywhere in the U.S. The upper Western part of the country (CO to NoCal/Oregon) seems best. NE - too cold, SE - too humid, Texas - too Texas, SW - too hot, So Cal - too expensive and California'y, NW (Eugene to Seattle) - too wet.

In researching places Longmont seems to be a very nice place with regards to weather, geography, and things to do (We love the outdoors and we want our kids to experience as much as they can). Longmont appears to be a cheaper option to living in Boulder with most of the advantages of living in Boulder.

The WI winters are becoming a real drag, it's not them, it's us. However, one of the things WI has going for it is that the schools are very good, at least in my opinion. We have 3 young kids so education is a big factor in deciding where to relocate.

What kind of schools does Longmont have? Do most kids go to public school? In states like CA the trend seems to be towards sending your kids to private schools for primary/secondary education. Is Longmont like that?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Longmont, Louisville, Superior, Niwot and Gunbarrel are all near Boulder but much less expensive, and if one shops around enough in Boulder there may be something there affordable.

Best to come out and look around, but until you can do that, use our Index and/or the Search tool to find the scores of threads we have on those 5 towns which will tell you a lot about each one.

I expect some of our regulars who live in those areas will add some comments a bit later.

I think there is a mix, but the majority of people we know go to public school. Longmont is part of the St. Vrain school district. It's a very large district. Obviously some schools are better than others.

My recommendation would be to come visit, look in areas you like, then visit the school. That is how you get a really good feel.

Our son has been in the St. Vrain district since kindergarten - he will be a senior this year. We feel his education has been great. I can really only speak to the specific schools he attended obviously.

When looking at houses, don't assume the closest school is the one zoned for that house - also, I've seen many times when being nosy regarding houses for sale in our neighborhood and looking online - that the school they have listed is incorrect. I would always check to district website to be sure.

Thank you for the information regarding longmont. We just booked a condo in Denver for mid August so we'll be out to check out the area.
