My husband and I are thinking of retiring to a small town outside of Boulder Co from the Bay Area in California. We are looking for a friendly town with some culture. I prefer a small mountain town vibe. (no more than 10,000). What are the winters like here. My husband does not want too much snow. We want a mountain feel, not really high desert. I love to garden so I would love good soil. We are interested in a large property, may 20-40 acres that can have multiple residences. Any suggestions or ideas??????????

You want to be in the mountains, but not a lot of snow?

Maybe Buena Vista / Salida.

Also, what is your budget?

Where we come from you can live in the mountains and not have too much snow. We would just like to get out of California. Our budget is around 700,000. is that possible in the Boulder outskirts?

You want some things that are mutually exclusive. Mountains but not much snow has already been touched on. A couple of suggestions have been made. Gardening in the mountains is difficult d/t short growing season.

Yes, even in Boulder $700K would get you a nice house. Not 20-40 acres anywhere in the vicinity, though.

Good points by all so far. You mentioned gardening and needing good soil......as noted, you will have a very short season in the mountains and good soil? You'll have to create that yourself.

Even down here on the front range we can get snow in May (did this last Mothers Day) and September.

Thanks for the input!!! Coming from California, we do have mountain areas with not much snow. You have given us some things to think about.

What do you consider a mountain ? Perhaps you mean what Coloradans call "foothills" ?
You might find what you want in the canyons & foothills west of Boulder, but there won't be many.

Here is one 37 acre place in foothills near Lyons, which is a little north and west of Boulder.

COhomefinder | 952 Steamboat Valley Rd Lyons, CO 80540 - MLS #8488520 - Home for sale at COhomefinder

Still the growing season and soil are not necessarily good for farming/gardening.

If you find a place you like, you can always put in a small green house to get your gardening fix.

I'd suggest the area from Lyons to Estes Park. It's an incredibly beautiful area with some large properties. Just don't buy anything near the river!
