Wondering if anyone has advice for best, ie the safest if not necessarily the fastest, driving route from San Diego to Boulder in mid-December? (I know, brilliant timing.)

We are driving separately with our animals and need to stay away from mountain passes, both because I get very sick, they scare me half to death, and obviously due to possible weather; avoid the murderous Las Vegas route; and prefer to stay south as long as possible and they go straight north, again because of possible snow/ice.

Also prefer to stay on main pikes just to be safe.

Thanks!

Based on your requirements, fairly simple choice. I-8/I-10 to Las Cruces NM, turn north on I-25 up to Denver.

As always, watch the weather, and road conditions. If like yesterday, I-25 south of Denver can get nasty this time of year. But usually clears quick. Allow for an extra night stopover as necessary.

Have your cars "winterized" before leaving SD. Antifreeze/coolant, windshield washer antifreeze fluid, ice scraper, snowbrush, good tires.

Default yep, that's the only choice

If you don't like mountain passes - me, I love them. I hate deserts, so I always take the I-15/I-70 route. This way you get to stop off for coffee in Beaver Creek or Vail, lunch in Breckenridge (9 mile detour), and snacks at Georgetown. All under Beautiful mountain vistas.

Thanks, REED 303. That is the route we took -- it was not so easy coming in during the snowstorm up the 25 but we made it. I guess the thing I did not realize was unlike New England they don't plow here, or salt/sand the roads, thus everyone was slipping around on the side roads. But my old driving in weather memory kicked in and we were fine -- thanks for the tip! That road through NM is long and desolate, but pretty in a stricken eerie sort of way.
