Broomfield has apartments and is only a 15-20 minute commute to Boulder.

What are your feelings about Nederland and Rollinsville? I know they're further away and more rural, but their housing prices are slightly better (less than 1k/mo), though the drive and potential inconvenience may cancel that out.
The closer you get to campus, the more undergrad students, and vice versa. I agree with Hipchik that Nederland/Rollinsville would not be the best location for you, at least not at first. Once you get used to driving in snow, and learn the area, maybe.
