Lyons is a nice little small town north of Boulder and little bit into the foothills. Lots of great trails all up in the foothills north and south of Boulder, a short car ride takes you up to alpine trails off the Peak to Peak highway. Also short drive to Estes Park with access to Rocky Mountain National Park. The whole area around there has all the trails you could ever want since there is a ton of public land, and it's breathtakingly beautiful.

Lyons is @5370', population ~2100. It's a small town - you'll need to go to Boulder or Longmont for the majority of necessities. //www.city-data.com/city/Lyons-Colorado.html
You haven't given us much to go on besides a "nice smaller home near the hills"... what other requirements do you have?
Do you want to live in an urban area where you can walk to coffee shops and hiking trails? Or do you want to be outside of town/in the foothills?

I did see that its like 30 mins to Boulder. thats probably a bit far for a trader joes pit stop or driving at night on a regular basis. I would rather not live in the flats. I'm not being too specific for more flexibility. 1200-1500 sf house, doesn't need work but nice vibe/finishes, in a pretty setting. I've lived in cities or close in suburbia all my life so refer more natural beauty but not isolated.

There are plenty of houses West of Boulder towards Nederland/Rollinsville that meet your criteria. Here are a couple of examples:

There are several very nice communities in the foothills where some of those ^ homes are: Boulder Heights, Pinebrook Hills, Sunshine Canyon for example. I am familiar with most of them if you have questions.
I have lived in the foothills near Nederland for 20 years. I'd be glad to fill you in on the pros and cons of mountain living.
