I'm going back to school at UC Online but am planning on applying to their MS program 1.5 years later. I hear Boulder is extremely expensive, so where should I lay low until living on campus is necessary?

Thanks, soon-to-be neighbors!

Do you need to have easy access to campus?

Most of the Boulder "suburbs" have become pretty classy. You probably need to go North. I haven't lived there since the '90s, but I visit family, there, regularly and things have changed.

First, it's CU not UC (I'm an alumni)
There's really nothing "north" of Boulder, not sure what the previous poster meant by that.
Yes, the surrounding towns of Louisville, Lafayette and Longmont have become much more expensive.
Assuming you are looking for an apartment... how much can you afford?

Gunbarrel, then Niwot, then Longmont are the three hops north of Boulder up Diagonal Highway.

I have a 2-BR/2-Bath in Gunbarrel (4 or 5 miles north of downtown I'd estimate). About $1400
a month, but with a shorter lease (3 months?) it'd be higher for you by maybe $75. You could
easily get by with an ... uh ... efficiency ? Is that what it's called when the bed folds down out
of the wall ? Which would be down in the 1100's or low 1200's. Or a small 1-Br/1-Bath.

I would not envy you for the logistics of a 3-mo stay (hope you have a permanent address
to which mail can be delivered) ... setting up electricity, water, apartment application, cable
(if you need the 'net and/or cable), ... but I guess it's doable.

It might be a good time (as it is summer, off-season) to pick a place that abuts the campus
(close enough for easy access for classes) and get moved in and ready for September. Not
sure if this matches your plans though.

Okay, I think of those areas as east of Boulder. Technically northeast
