I'm moving at the end of the month, and I think its either Portland, Denver/Boulder, or Seattle; I'm leaning towards Denver or Boulder at the moment and I need advice! I'm moving because I was laid off from my Las Vegas culinary union Backwaiter job at the Bellagio due to slowing tourism. I will be primarily looking for either server or server assistant positions in either high-volume casual dining(P.F. Chang's, Cheesecake Factory, etc) or Fine-dining(I have experience in very well-known establishments and great references) and I want to know if anyone either works at places like these or knows what their business is like at the moment.

I'm a 22-year old single straight white male who wants to live in a place with nice weather(I actually LOVE Snow, rain, and clouds), eventually get back into school for either an econ or finance degree, and be able to make friends, meet cute girls, and stay put for a few years at least

I was born and raised in Hawaii(too expensive), then moved to South Lake Tahoe( no year-round jobs, and no university), then LA (too crowded!), then Vegas(too Hot, no jobs) and now I think I finally know what I want in wherever I live:
mixed weather, cold is awesome and ok, just not 100+ heat regularly
Decent and affordable universities
Decent and affordable places with roommates
Access to ski resorts(SNowboarding is my SAVIOR)
Cool, intelligent, ambitious people
Cute girls
Restaurant Front-of-House job availability
Overall FUN lifestyle

So what do YOU guys think? Please reply because I need to make this decision soon. I'll be moving with around $7k, 0 debt, my All-Wheel-Drive Subaru wagon loaded up and maybe my bed... Anywaaays please reply asap let me know what ya think, I'll be checkin in frequently so I'll def reply. Thanks guys!

I like the occasional rain storm, but lack of sunshine is something that wasn't an option for me. The weather here is GREAT.

I think Boulder sounds like a good place for you, especially with your Subaru (seriously I'd never seen so many in my life until I moved out here). It is pretty inexpensive if you are willing to live with roommates. The only thing is that waiting jobs can be competitive with all the students, but it probably wouldn't be a problem with your references.

Good luck!

Default NY Times: Seattle, Boulder, Denver, Albuquerque Not In Recession

Hey,
You responded w/ a great response to my post on the Flagstaff forum. I'm inquiring about Boulder on this forum so I can't comment about Boulder. However, I was born and raised in Seattle, and I can tell you that Seattle is a Union city with a strong manufacturing and high-tech base and is RECESSION - PROOF, unlike Vegas (I love the Bellagio; sorry to hear of your layoff there). And, there is skiiing all over Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Colorado. And you've got some great choices on your list, because according to the NY Times, there is no recession in Denver, Boulder, Seattle, see this MAP:

The New York Times > Week in Review > Image > Cities in Trouble vs. Growing Cities

BTW, as to the comment about the proliferation of subarus in Boulder, the same is true on Nob Hill in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and also here in Flagstaff!

Tom-
It was great to see your graph because it looks like its denver/boulder for me
I'm certain I can get work, get back into school and snowboard to my hearts content, and generally love life. I may not immediately have the mansion in Breckenridge with the jacuzzi filled with playmates , the 8 huskies to race around town in the winter with, and fully stocked bar overlooking the superpipe, but all in due time, I'm sure haha

As fate has it, Im actually visiting fam and friends in Prescott, not too far from Flag and loving the weather, as opposed to the heat I was feeling in Scottsdale this morning(in December?! I want snow!)

Thanks again Tom, good luck on your search for your ideal small town

I have some beach front property in Colorado to sell you, too! I am old enough to remeber the last recession in the aircraft industry, the bumper stickers said "Will the last one to leave Seattle please turn out the lights?" In today's Daily Camera (Boulder paper) there was a headline article about 4500 layoffs coming for Level 3 (a big high-tech player out here).

FALSE!

I read the article, it was 450, as in Four-hundred-and-fifty; not 4,500, as in 10% of the number you typed, and the employer is in Broomfield, not Boulder...

Broomfield-based Level 3 to cut 8 percent of work force : County News : Boulder Daily Camera (http://www.dailycamera.com/news/2008/dec/08/level-3-cut-8-work-force/ - broken link)

And in a neighboring article, boulder's outlook for 2009 was described as "downright sunny-by comparison" not just to the US as a whole, but even to Colorado as a whole, a state which already outperforms much of the US economically.

Anyways, positive thoughts guys! Stop trying to hog all the Colorado goodness for yourself! LOL

Ok, my mistake, but it is still 8% of their workforce.
