Hi,
I am considering relocating to the Boulder area but cannot afford Boulder prices.
I am interested in areas with good schools and low housing prices. We will be interested in renting a 3-4 bedroom house for the forseeable future, but would like to have the option to buy someday if we can manage. We don't have a price range at this time. I am interested in which areas are MOST affordable while still having good schools, safe areas.
I have seen recommendations for Louisville and Longmont (SW). Which of those areas is more affordable for renting/buying? Any other cities/towns that people would recommend?
My husband wants to attend Denver Seminary but we don't want to live right in the Denver area since we've heard it's a bit ugly. We love the mountains and trees. We will also have friends in Fort Collins so it would be nice to be a bit closer to them vs. living in the South Denver area.
Any suggestions?
Additionally, are there are any great cities near/ suburbs of Denver that are pretty and have good schools?
Thanks!
Alli

You have many wrong assumptions and are going down the wrong track. First, Denver is "a bit ugly", where did you learn that nonsense??? Usually it is a comment from people whose experience comes from driving fast down a highway and saying they were there. You need to get out of the car and really look around.

Denver has a national reputation as a progressive city with many unique neighborhoods. There are many beautiful areas in Denver and the city is known for its expansive park system and trails. Many areas of Denver do not remind you of a city and have a more suburban setting, especially in the southern part of the City. The nearby cities that surround Denver are considered good places to live with additional amazing parks and trails that interconnect throughout the metro area.

Also, The Denver Seminary is located in one of the most beautiful areas. It is in the City of Littleton, right along the Platte and access the the Platte River Greenway and the Trails. That area is absolutely fantastic. You are near old town Littleton with its own commuter rail station. Across Sante Fe is Ridge Road, off Prince, with great treed established neighborhoods that are highly desired. The school system is in well to do Arapahoe County and Littleton is the County Seat. I challenge you to take a ride down Ridge Road and up on Prince past the Cemetery and stop in old town, and walk around. You will know what I am talking about.

Boulder is not the only place in Colorado. Why would you want to commute from Boulder County to Littleton--that is crazy long commute. In addition, the area around Littleton, South Denver and the Southern Metro Towns are very nice places to live. Many neighborhoods of Denver are more livable and relaxing than many areas in Boulder. Boulder is really a very dense city with heavy traffic and has the influence of the hormone marinated youths of the university who drive fast; and have the energy to make life intense and furious. Boulder is nice but there are other good options that are closer to the Denver Seminary.

So you have relatives in Fort Collins that you will visit ocassionally?? Is that a reason to have a difficult commute to school which you would do more often???

I have driven, walked, biked and used public transit in that area of Littleton often; and you will have so many gorgeous places to live that have extensive parks, waterways, trees and excellent access to the mountains.

Livecontent,
Thank you for the info! It appears that I have been misinformed. It's great to know that the area that Denver Seminary is located is a nice area! My husband only plans on going to school part time since he works full time and has a family of 5 to support, so living right nearby wasn't a priority.
However, considering your response, I am going to look into it. Are those areas you mentioned as affordable or more affordable than Louisville or Longmont? We aren't rich and my husband is planning on going back for his masters, so we'd want an area of homes that were probably 300,000ish and less.
Your reply has already been more than helpful, however, if you have any more info on any of the neighborhoods and areas you mentioned, i'd be happy to hear about them.
Thanks!
Alli

The area near the Denver Seminary has many homes that meet all incomes. Yes, there are many high priced areas but there are others, nearby, that can meet your needs. For 300, 000 you can easily find good homes in great neighborhoods right near off of Ridge Road. 300,000 really is not at the lower end of the scale.

You can also go east across Broadway, into the City of Centennial which would give you more choices and you have no problem finding a big enough home under 300,000.

Another area to consider is Southwest Jefferson County which many of these areas have a Littleton address but are unicorporated. That would be areas in the Columbine Valley Columbine High School, Southwest Plaza---anywhere west on Bowles, Coal Mine, Ken Caryl. Many, many more choices of economical homes in this area of town. Schools would be under the well regarded Jefferson County.

None of these areas are Denver but newer and nice areas of Denver do extend southwest past Sheridan, which is generally the border of Denver County. You will find these homes along Bear Creek and near Marston Reservoir.

I went to the Denver Seminary website and I found this school very interesting. You will also find many large well attended churches in this area of Denver. You will not find me there because I am an atheist; but I occasionally drop in for good events and some good free food. Nothing is better than a good potluck at a Christian Church--I will listen to most religious persuasions as long as they feed me. I am still looking for loaves and fishes, but there is still some good mac and cheese.

Hey, you know, I really appreciate the time you took to get back to me, as well as all the info you gave me! I'm pretty excited that it seems like we will have plenty of options, IF my hubby can get a job there. I'm saving the info in a word doc and we will look into those areas if the time comes.
Thanks!
Allison
