Just sad to see yet another once-rich fighter follow the same path as those before him. Rags to riches to serious financial woes. This once-proud and honored fighter is stuggling financially now. I hope he comes out of it OK.
That's unfortunate considering all of the money that Holyfield. I was never a big fan of Holyfield as person. The way that he was always going on about God and how he was a born again Christian, meanwhile he was busy having nine kids with eight different women or something like that. It always struck me as a bit hypocritical. And naturally, in addition to not paying his mortgage or taxes, he's way behind on child support too.
As much as I appreciated Holyfield, I find it difficult to pity him, especially after reading that he lived in a 54,000 sqft mansion.
How many people did he house in that mansion: 100; 50; 15; 5; 2?
Chances are, there were probably just a handful of people residing there. Assuming that was the case, why would anyone need that much space for such few people? It costs a whole lot to cool and heat that much real estate. I'm sure he (and probably most of us) would've done much better by living a less exuberant/more modest lifestyle.
Maybe he was trying to impress and show a few of his fellow (so-called) Christian brothers how much "God has blessed him" given that so many of them are fond of flaunting it whenever their new found discipline grants them a taste - a tiny morsel - of excess and exuberance. I can just hear it now. . ."Oh dear brother. Isn't God great? He gave me a 54,000 sqft mansion. . .for me and my dog. Praise His Holy name!"

Yeah, a 54000 square foot mansion is pretty excessive. I can't imagine needing that much space. Here in CA, a 4000 sq ft house is damn good living space for two families.
He had to know that one day, his Boxing career would be over, along with the big money, and that he couldn't sustain the level of spending that he enjoyed when he was in his prime. Just shameful the short-sightedness. Doesn't seem his Christian brothers advised him correctly.
I want to feel bad for Evander, BUT I really can't feel bad for a man who not only lived in an 11 million dollar house which required 1 mill an anum just to maintain, but made the money he did.
I don't think he is flat broke and may just have to "downgrade" a bit.

Mayweather will be broke within 10 years of his retirement. He will go down the path of Holyfield, Tyson, and Foreman. Of course Foreman rebounded very well and Tyson is back to making some money. Between the three of them they lost near a billion dollars.
Anytime I see a fighter entering the ring with an entourage of a dozen or more goons, I think, here's a guy who is going to be broke and alone by the time he's 40. In some ways I feel bad for Evander, but overall not so much. Guys like Holyfield and Bowe lived to excess. Huge mansions, fleets of luxury cars, and surrounding themselves with yes men and leeches. I'm sure there were shady accountants and lawyers who got rich off these fighters too.
