Head shots are a big part of boxing, so obviously they're bound to happen. Even in kids boxing.

You're right about the potential for brain damage or other injuries. It would concern me as a mom if my little boy wanted to engage in this sport, BUT:
- it can and does happen in other sports, too.
- like Sam812 said, protective gears are there to lower the risks during sparring and competition. A quality head gear, mouth guard, and good gloves are adequate, I think.
- many things are potentially dangerous. That's life. As much as we might want to, we can't shield and protect our children from everything out there.

Also: it's a beautiful sport.
Not engaged in it myself, but I have a big amount of respect for boxers. Their courage, determination and endurance are very inspiring.

So, if my son wanted to box, he would have my support. But I would, however, do my homework to make sure he goes to a good gym with a good coach.
