I remember the fight well. I was playing in a nightclub and sneaking in the kitchen during the breaks to watch it on the TV they had in there. It was a shocking, gutsy performance by a guy whose skills weren't even close to his opponent, yet beat him.

I remember that night too when Spinks beat Ali. I think his record was only like 6-0-1 if I remember correctly when he beat Ali. My first thought was Ali threw the fight so he could easily win back the heavyweight title in a rematch. And that is exactly what happened. I noticed no news agency ever brought it up, so perhaps it was only in my thoughts. But... to this day I still half think that is what happened.

Just saying....

Dude was 26-17. Very far from being "Legendary". Only famous for having no teeth and getting lucky in his first fight against Ali.

His moment in the sun wasn't luck, but pure aggressive determination when he beat Ali. Ali didn't throw that fight. He just couldn't match the animalistic craziness of Spinks that night. He was like a caged animal. Spinks never recaptured this aggression after the fight and without it, his lack of skill was his undoing. Without a doubt, his brother Michael was a much better boxer.
