At the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas, Edwin Valero (25-0, 25KOs) stopped Antonio Pitalua (46-4, 40KOs) in two rounds to capture the vacant WBC lightweight title. The first time Pitalua was stopped since 1995.
Valero came out with the jab. Pitalua fought back with a combination. Valero fought from a distance and pressed forward with the jab and punches to the body. In the final ten seconds of the round they exchanged some hard power punches.
After the fight: Valero says he'll KO anyone he gets in the ring with. Says JMM is the best in the lightweight division and he would like to fight him if the promoters are willing to make it happen. Also said he's willing to move up to 140 for a fight with Pacquiao or Hatton.
Time for him to step up as Pitalua was ripe for a stoppage. Time will tell if he can take as well as he can give, but good for him. I hope he's the real deal.

His form still needs a lot of work, he leaves himself open and keeps a wide stance, but his punch power and hand speed are pretty impressive. I think he needs a better trainer, otherwise he'll just be another Mayorga (who is my favorite to watch, but who could have been so much better if he had any discipline), but with the right trainer he can be one of the best ever.
There's a chance that he could be ready to fight Pacquiao in 18 months with the right circumstances. I'm holding out hope for that...
