Undefeated WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero (25-0, 25KOs) is pumped for bigger things in 2010. He defends his title against Mexican challenger Hector Velazquez on December 12 at El Nuevo Circo in Caracas, Venezuela. Valero was on point for Thursday's 30-day WBC mandated weigh-in. He was stepped on the scales at a ripped 149-pounds. He can weigh no more than 142 a week before the fight.

The knockout king, mentioned in the past as a possible opponent for Manny Pacquiao, believes he is the only fighter with enough power to beat the Filipino champion. Valero also wants Antonio DeMarco and Humberto Soto.

Valero is a beast and there hasn't been a boxer who could stand up to his power yet.

I'd like to see Maidana v Valero as the undercard on Pacquiao-Mayweather in May with the winners taking each other on in September.

Pretty bold claim coming from a fighter who hasn't fought anyone noteworthy yet. Let him pay his dues working his way through some ranked fighters before trying to bait a legitimate champion.

You don't think Pitalua was noteworthy?
The guy had won 14 straight fights all by KO or TKO leading to the Valero fight and Edwin just punished him. Pitalua is 48 (42) and 4 (2), with his only other KO loss coming in 1995. Vicente Mosquera was also a quality fighter. In fact, 12 of his last 13 opponents had winning records, most with pretty strong ones.
I definitely agree with the Maidana-Valero idea, two KO kings going up against one another, it would be a fun fight even if it only went a couple rounds.

Pitalua is 30 years old, and most of his KO's came from whooping on inferior oppenents. Check his record, in his last 14 fights leading to the Valero fight, he's fought guys with less than ten fights or with losing records. One guy was making his pro debut while another was 0-1, not exactly a surprise he KO'd them.

Mosquera is another one. He fought twice outside of Panama, and his opponents did not have winning records and some had less than ten fights as well. He was already 15-0 when he foughts guys with a 7-4 or 3-1-1 record, hardly a fair fight. He built his record on bad fighters early on in his career.

Let Valero get passed a few guys in his league like Amir Kahn or Juan Urango before calling out Manny. Even then, it's a long way to the top, and he'll need to fight a household name and win by KO in order to generate any public interest. He'll have to KO someone like Cotto, Berto, Mosley or Marquez to increase his stock.
