At the MEN Arena in Manchester, England, WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (24-1, 22 KOs) retained his title with a ninth-round stoppage over former two-time champion John Ruiz (44-9-1, 30 KOs). Haye scored four knockdowns during the contest.
At the start of the first, Ruiz came out jabbing and started to take the fight to Haye. Haye stepped back and decked Ruiz down with a huge right hand. Ruiz was in trouble as he beat the count. Haye went on the attack. When Ruiz was against the ropes, Haye nailed him to the back of the head and sent Ruiz down hard. The ref called time and then took a point from Haye for the illegal shot. Ruiz tried to charge Haye but held him to hang on. Haye was outfighting him with quicker punches. Ruiz landed a good combination at the end.
After 17-years of waiting, Bernard Hopkins (51-5-1, 32KOs) won a twelve round lopsided decision over Roy Jones Jr. (54-7, 40KOs) at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The scores were 117-110, 117-110 and 118-109 for Hopkins
They came out in a tactical nature with each guy showing respect and then Hopkins quickly began to fire punches at Jones. They started fighting on the inside. Hopkins was jabbing to the body and trying to make it an inside fight. Jones with a wild combination that missed and Hopkins fired back.
A jab-fest in the early part of round two. Hopkins started quickly pounding Jones against the ropes. A lot of holding every time these guys came in close. Hopkins landed a good left and tried to go after Jones against the ropes. Jones tied him up. Hopkins came in with his head, causing a cut near the left eye of Jones.
I was about to make a thread after Bernard Hopkins and Jones fight. The online connection to watch the fight was poor, I did manage to see bits and pieces but I heard everything, like the radio. With that said, this was horrible. The only good part occurred after Bhop faked a hard behind head foul by Jones, he bull rushed him but then the round ended. Boxing wonders why fans are leaving. Fans were actually booing throughout the fight, not dominating arena but you could hear the boos. It was horrible.

Not much was expected of these two, so I don't understand the outrage. Must've been an MMA crowd there. Hopkins expected to win. Many watched to see if Jones would do something unexpected, maybe outbox or even knock out Bernard. Didn't happen though. Hopkins is naturally a cautious, defensive fighter especially at this stage of his career. He doesn't have the kind of power to put a guy away with one shot. He also has always had problems with clever boxers and he conserves his energy because despite his conditioning, he can't fight hard each and every round like Calzaghe can. He has just enough respect for Jones to be exceptionally cautious even though he knew that a well-placed shot to Jones' noggin might put Roy down.
For his part, Roy came prepared. He was well-conditioned, in far better shape than he was for Green. He was very cautious as well, resorting to rabbit punches and low blows to keep Hopkins from mugging him. He knows Hopkins, knows how he fights, knows he can fight dirty, so Roy fought not to get knocked out. He knows he can't take much of a punch anymore, and to last the distance with Hopkins after getting clocked by Green probably gives him somewhat of a boost. He didn't want to suffer the indignity of being knocked out by Bernard. A partial victory for Roy here.
About people leaving Boxing, all I can say is that I am one of many hardcore Boxing fans who would rather watch an old fight between nobodies like Chuck Wepner and Charlie Polite than any MMA glorified wrestling match. I am one of many who will never leave this sport.
After the Hopkins/Calzaghe fight I promised myself I'd never watch another Hopkins fight again. Regretfully, I broke that promise to myself last night. If Hopkins had even an ounce of character, he would be embarassed by his antics last night. Not only did he fight a dirty fight--low blows, hitting on the break, head butts, hitting after the bell etc., he put on an academy award winning performance any time Roy tapped him on the head or beltline. Pathetic!
Even more frustrating were the commentators who refused to call it for what it was, instead we had this Doug Fischer calling a biased fight in Bernards favor. This guy is a disgrace and should never be allowed to call another fight. Then we Dan Rafael who can't get it right either. If any of these so called experts think that Roy's rabbit punches were enough to crack an Easter egg, they need to find a new line of work. Where is Lampley and Merchant when you need them? They would have called out Bernard on his over-acting and pathetic attempts at trying to get Roy Dq'd or at the very least points deducted, which worked in one case. Tony Weeks is just that...weak!
Then we have Roy himself. Always promising to dazzle the crowd at press conferences only to enter the ring and play it safe, throwing very few punches and not making the fight.
Hopkins is a disgrace. I will not watch anther of his foul filled, cheap shot artists fights again. He should take his sorry act to the WWE where they appreciate someone who can play dead from a phantom blow

Thanks for these comments. I didn't see the fight, but what a disgrace it sounds like it was. Two guys hyping the fight and coming in chisled and looking the part, only to reveal that they are a shell of their former selves....all of course designed to make as much money as possible while they can. This by the way, doesn't reflect on the sport of boxing, but strictly on these two characters.
the Haye fight was way more entertaining, Jones/Hopkins 2 put me to sleep through the fight.
