I just caught some clips on YouTube of these two and they are both absolutely pathetic. Both relectant to pull the trigger as if they had a silent agreement not to hurt each other. There standing before "The Executioner" was a shot fighter with a glass jaw who was ripe for the kill. Hopkins couldn't deliver that blow. It was as easy as this to beat him Sat. night.
Jones was successful in giving the appearance through his pre-fight behavior and physique that he was not the same man who was put away by Green in the first round. All he had to do was stand there, cocked and ready, and this was enough to ward off most of Hopkins' plan to knock him out. Hopkins appeared gun shy, scared of the reputation of Jones. It certainly boosts Jones' claim that Hopkins didn't want to fight him until he thought he Jones was almost dead. Very disappointed in Hopkins and he did look his age. Hopkins looked old. Time for him to retire.
Jones absolutely pathetic with all that posing. He looked old and washed up as well. I never liked his style, but he did a physche job on Bernard. He was afraid of getting hit, but I bet even he was surprised of the apprehension Bernard showed. Just a pathetic fight, even more so than I expected. Time for both to call it quits and as Tyson put it, "quit embarrassing the sport."
Hopkins was never an exciting fighter, but there was always an element of excitement in his fights because he fought opponents who made the fight...De La Hoya, Trinidad, Taylor, Tarver, Calzaghe etc. He's always been a dirty (he'll tell you cagey) fighter and for the most part a counter puncher. Don't get me wrong, he's effective and smart in the ring, well conditioned and seasoned. But he still has that prison mentality and that do anything to win method of fighting. It's too bad refs let him get away with that nonsense. Where is Mills Lane when you need him most, he would not have put up with that bull.
Jones has promised to dazzle fans in his last half dozen fights only to show up content to prance around the ring like a praying mantis while throwing very few punches. What is most frustrating is that Jones could have won this fight had he pressed Hopkins. Hopkins is a slow starter and if you take the fight to him, he'll get tired like he did against Calzaghe. For whatever reason Jones refuses to let his hands go. He also could have won the third fight with Tarver, but just didn't let his hands go, fighting scared. Truth is, he never recovered from his first KO, and has been a shell of himself since. His only flash of greatness in recent fights came against Trinidad, a 35 year old much smaller fighter who hadn't fought in two years.
I will never watch either of their fights again. Neither of them should ever mention their names in the same sentence as Robinson or Moore either. Those were men who at age 45 still fought their heart out and gave it their all. Class acts and true warriors.
In addition to Hopkins and Jones, it's time for a few others to hang 'em up for good as well:
James Toney
John Ruiz
Jermain Taylor
Evander Holyfield
Johnny Tapia
Erik Morales...though I haven't seen him fight since his comeback, I doubt he'll be competitive.
I totally agree. I remember first time I saw him fight when he was in his prime. I thought I was seeing the second coming of Ray Robinson because he had physical skills that I had NEVER seen before in a boxer. Now, he's beyond terrible.
I agree. I'm not sure about the money issue, but wouldn't be surprised by that either.
Welcome to the "bling bling", "make it rain," MTV cribs generation of athletes. With all the money they spend on worhtless BS, it would not surprise me either
