Getting closer.

We will be looking at rentals (long term 1 or 2 year lease) once we hit the ground in a few weeks and have a nice list going. Since we are not familiar with the area, we have no idea if the property "looks good" on the internet but sits in a less than desireable area. We are looking at 3 BR house or condo allowing a dog. 2 car garage is preferable.

With google maps and google earth, it is a little easier getting an impression, but nothing like being there.

Anyone care to post areas to avoid or considerations (train tracks/hub, busy traffic area, crime, fraternity/sorority party houses, stadium traffic, etc.).

Thanks in advance!

I hope that you understand that this is a university town and the party house may just decide to show up next door when last year, it was 3 blocks away. I would avoid anything on 19th, 11th, 7th, or Kagy. Those streets are slammed parking lots when people are going to campus in the morning or evening rush. The Greek houses are mostly just off campus now so if you are 5 blocks away, you may not have an issue.

I expect property crime to be up now that the 20% of residents won't be able to buy weed on demand. They can grow their own but most CA transplants can't manage that level of responsibility. Lock your bike, iPod, iPad, and car at all times next year until the stupid ones figure out that Deer Lodge has the highest percentage of violent criminals in the nation, even higher than San Quintin or Attica.

Thanks for the info. And good info to boot!

I remember the realtor giving us a showing back on our second house years ago. Beautiful view, nice neighborhood, quiet....until the airliner flew over head on a land heading and shook us to our boots. We didn't know the area, but we now knew where the airport was!!

Is this a real post? I know you are going to visit before picking a place! Relying on google online? Really? It reads like you have never visited this place. how will you know it is a place for you?

Bozeman doesn't really have any crime areas or poor sections or places to avoid. Random crimes can happen anywhere.

I do agree that 19th, 11th, 7th and Kagy are traffic arteries, still, "traffic" is relative compared to bigger cities.

I've lived in Bozeman since 1970, when I moved here from Helena to go to MSU. It has grown and changed over the decades, but it still has a town character, not an urban character, although it is no longer the farm town it used to be.
