A well insulated sunroom or a room with South facing and West facing windows can give effect of greenhouse in winter without trouble or expense of heating a greenhouse. It makes for nice place to sit and read in winter and grow few tomato plants. I would suggest working up to a heated greenhouse because one small slip-up and all plants would be dead. I usually bring few plants indoors from ouside greenhouse or garden to carry over winter- tomatoes, peppers, herbs, perennial flowers. Also to extend your growing season in Southwest Montana look up cold frames.
In Montana every public school district has Adult Education programs. Some have a few offerings and others are extensive. For a nominal course fee you can learn how all sorts of things like how to tie flies, throw a pot, grow a garden, trace family tree, improve computer software skills, etc. You can find lots of things to learn to keep busy through winter. Another way to meet people and learn interesting things would be to volunteer as docent at Museum of Rockies. Volunteering to read at schools is another good way to stay involved.
